How to read this
Your TFSA room starts the year you turn 18, as long as you are a resident of Canada. A new amount is added every January. Room you don't use carries forward, with no deadline.
Money you take out is not lost room. The amount you withdraw is added back on January 1 of the next year. If you put it back sooner and have no other room left, that counts as going over.
This calculator only adds up the yearly limits. It cannot see your accounts. Your real number is the one CRA has, and even that can lag, because banks report last year's deposits and withdrawals early in the new year.
Find your real number
- Sign in to CRA My Account and find your TFSA contribution room.
- CRA's figure is as of January 1. Subtract anything you have deposited since then.
- Write the result where you will see it. That is the space you can fill.

Where this comes from
- Canada Revenue Agency: Calculate your TFSA contribution room, for the yearly limits and how withdrawals are added back.
- Canada Revenue Agency: If you over-contribute to a TFSA, for the 1% a month tax.
- The total for someone eligible since 2009 who never contributed is $109,000 in 2026.
- This tool does not handle years you were a non-resident, or transfers from a spouse or a former spouse. For those, use CRA's number.
