- I will never tell you which stock, fund or coin to buy, or when to buy or sell it.
- I will never accept money to promote a stock, crypto token, trading platform or leveraged product.
- Every rule and limit comes from an official source, and every projection is labelled as an illustration.
- When I get something wrong, I'll correct it publicly.
Who's writing
I'm Lucas. By day I keep buildings running in Vancouver, and I've spent seven years reading the best money writers I could find. I'm not a financial planner, portfolio manager or registered adviser, and Planted North doesn't give personal advice. It explains how things work and shares what I do and why, so you can make your own decisions with better questions.
Sources and numbers
- Account rules, limits and deadlines (TFSA, FHSA, RRSP, Home Buyers' Plan) come from the Canada Revenue Agency or another official source, and each issue lists its sources at the end.
- Statistics about Canadians come with their source and year. If I can't source a number, I don't use it.
- Growth examples use a constant assumed return (usually 6% a year) to show how compounding works. They're illustrations, not forecasts. Real returns go up and down.
- Rules change. I'll always point you to check your own numbers in CRA My Account.
How I cover Bitcoin and crypto
I'm open about being a long-term Bitcoin believer, and I may own some. That's a bias, so here's how I keep it in check:
- Crypto is one topic among many. The core of Planted North is accounts, habits, fees and broad diversification.
- Whenever crypto comes up, so do its risks: it can fall 50% or more in a year, and position size matters more than conviction.
- I'll never suggest crypto as the answer to a general money question, and I'll never promote a token or exchange for pay.
Referral links and sponsors
- Referral links are labelled before the link, with exactly what I get (for example: Wealthsimple pays each of us $25 when you open an account through my link and deposit $100 or more).
- At most one referral link per issue, in no more than one issue in four, and always with a note that any bank or brokerage can do the job.
- I only mention products I actually use or have reviewed. Compensation never decides what I write.
- Sponsors, if any, are marked Sponsored, and are never individual stocks, crypto tokens or leveraged products.
Corrections
If an issue contains an error, I fix the web version with a dated correction note at the top and mention it in the next Sunday email. Spotted something? Email hello@plantednorth.ca. I read every message.
